There always seems to be one aspect or another of my life that is teetering on the brink of being out of control.  Last week, it was housework and this week it’s school work.  Some balance between the two would be nice, but I’ve never seemed to be able to find that balance, so maybe it’s a futile search.

So, last week was the Kiddo’s birthday.  He turned 14, which makes me ancient.  I had very late classes the day of his birth, so nothing much was done except for hiding a couple of really funny cards in his school work for him to find during the day.  He was so touched that he called me as soon as he got home.  Love it!  The next day I was home earlier, so that was the day that he got his present – a $50 Visa gift card.  It’s exactly what he asked for, except more money than he expected.  He was really happy.  I also included an iTunes gift card that will allow him to buy the equivalent of a CD, but this way he can pick and choose which songs to buy.  He’s never experienced the thrill of legal music downloading, so I can’t wait to walk him through the process.  On Saturday, he had a friend come over.  I took them to the mall to run around and hang out and spend all of his birthday money, then around dinner time, we left to go to the Movie Tavern for dinner and a movie all in one.  I really like the Movie Tavern.  It may be a passe thing nowadays, but I still love it.  So much better than a regular movie.  The Kiddo’s friend had never been to anything like it, and he really enjoyed himself, so it was a very successful night.  The movie was Beverly Hills Chihuahua.  Meh.  It was cute, had some funny spots, but overall it was only average.  I questioned the boys’ decision to go see it, since the previews looked like a girly flick more than a teenaged boy flick.  But they enjoyed themselves, so it was all good.  When we got home, we had a giant cookie cake from the Great American Cookie Company and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning playing with our various mall purchases – them the video games, me the books.  The Kiddo’s friend reportedly said that he had a blast and would love to come to his birthday again next year.  Heh!  That’s a good birthday.

Except now I’m the mother of a 14-year-old.  *shudder*

Last week, I was really on top of my school work.  To the point that I had quite a bit of down time to get caught up on reading, and to participate in a study group and to do a little tutoring.  I purposefully worked to clear my schedule so that I wouldn’t have to worry about homework over the weekend.  Now that I’m in a new school week, I feel like I didn’t get enough finished.  Oh, sure the house is clean, but I have a lesson plan due Wednesday, and a week’s worth of Linear Algebra homework to do by Thursday, and a new web page to design for, um, Web Design class.

The really, really good news is that last week and today were midterm for me, and tonight I took my last midterm exam.  Whew!  Half a semester to go before I *gulp* graduate!  (Reading that gave me goosebumps.  I’m a little excited, can you tell?)  The grade from the first midterm came in tonight, as well.  Algebra through Technology netted me a 98.  Not too shabby.  Hopefully tomorrow I’ll find out how I did in Linear Algebra.  I’m pretty confident that’ll be another A.  I checked every answer with my handy dandy graphing calculator and got the same results as I did when I churned the work by hand.  It should be good.  And tonight’s test in School & Community only took me 15 minutes to take.  That could either mean I knew every answer, or I didn’t know any of them.  There were 4 questions that I wasn’t completely sure about the answer.  Out of 50 questions, if I miss all four of those, I’m still making an A.

Did I mention that I only have half a semester to go before I GRADUATE?!?
